Discover the history of the Montecassino Abbey

 

Cassino, a few minutes far from the lovely Best Western Hotel Rocca, is a city that feeds on history, culture and unspoilt nature that surrounds the area. 

 

Montecassino Abbey

One of the most important monuments of the city is the famous Montacassino Abbey which played a very important role during the Second World War.

In 1944 the abbey was bombed several times, but always rebuilt in its splendor and is today one of the destinations to discover and visit.The Battle of Montecassino was long and caused immense losses of human life.

 

The Abbey of Montecassino, the epicenter of Benedictine devotion in the world and a national monument since 1866, stands on the mountain overlooking the beautiful valley of the Rapido and Liri rivers. Between the walls, the monks have transcribed the works of classical antiquity: precious documents are preserved, such as the "Placito cassinese" first legal document in the vulgar language, miniature codes and rare incunabula.

Furthermore, "Ora et Labora et Lege" prevails: the motto of the Rule of Saint Benedict that the monks still follow today in their daily routine.

You can visit the whole monastery and talk to monks who will tell you the history of the abbey from its origins. Also, within an information center where you can book a guided tour with industry experts for individuals, schools and groups.

 

Military cemeteries

Most of the victims of the battle of Montecassino rests in military memorials, a place where every year there are ceremonies and pilgrimages from all over the world.

Commonwealth Military Cemetery

On the way to Sant'Angelo Theodice, where 4,265 soldiers from Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, India and South Africa rest in peace.

In 1956 inside the Cemetery the memorial of Cassino was erected in order to pay homage to the soldiers of Queen Elizabeth who took part in the conflict.

 

German Military Cemetery

Near Colle Marino, a fraction of Caira, are buried 20,035 soldiers fallen during the southern Italian war.

The Germanic cemetery of Caira is today an oasis of peace that invites to pray and reflect, every year visitors from all over the world come to express love and brotherhood.

 

Polish Military Cemetery

It is located near Montecassino, in the place where 1,052 soldiers of the II Polish Army Corps were buried, including General Andres.
