One of the most important monuments in the city is the famous Abbey of Montecassino, which played a crucial role during World War II Nel 1944 fu più volte bombardata, ma sempre ricostruita nel suo splendore ed è oggi è una delle mete da scoprire e visitare.
The Abbey of Montecassino, overlooking the Rapido and Liri river valleys, preserves unique treasures such as the Placito Cassinese, illuminated manuscripts, and extremely rare incunabula. Even today, the monks follow the motto ‘Ora et Labora et Lege,’ balancing prayer, work, and study.
It is possible to visit the monastery and speak with the monks, or to book guided tours for individuals, schools, and groups with industry experts.
Thousands of soldiers who fell during World War II rest at Montecassino. The military cemeteries, destinations for international commemorations and pilgrimages, tell stories of courage and brotherhood.
Commonwealth Cemetery: It is the resting place of 4,265 soldiers from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, India, and South Africa. The Cassino Monument, erected in 1956, honors the fallen of Queen Elizabeth’s regiment.
German Cemetery: In Colle Marino (Caira), it is the resting place of 20,035 soldiers. Today it is a place of silence and reflection, a symbol of reconciliation.
Polish Cemetery: Near the abbey, it houses the graves of 1,052 soldiers of the Polish II Corps, including General Anders, who played a key role in the liberation of Montecassino.
